The AF Oath
REGIONAL CANDIDATES WHO HAVE TAKEN THE OATH:
Amalgamation Friendly Oath for Mayoral and Council Candidates
As a candidate for public office in the Capital Region, I recognize that the community may determine—through evidence, consultation, and democratic choice—that amalgamation, or steps toward greater municipal integration, could be beneficial for our shared future.
With this understanding, I make the following commitments:
1. Commitment to Community Interest Above Personal Interest
I affirm that the well-being of residents and the strength of our region outweigh my personal political ambitions, status, or future role in local government.
2. Acceptance of Potential Political Impact
I understand that, should amalgamation or partial integration proceed, the structure of local government may change in ways that affect my own political path, including the possibility of:
- competing in a larger or restructured electoral system,
- serving in a transitional or temporary capacity,
- or stepping aside as roles are consolidated.
I acknowledge and accept these possibilities in good faith.
3. Respect for the Democratic Process
I pledge to honour the community’s decision—whether for amalgamation, deeper service integration, or maintaining the status quo—and I will not obstruct or delay processes that residents or councils approve as being in the region’s best interest.
4. Commitment to Constructive Leadership
If the community, councils, or Province direct steps toward amalgamation, I will work transparently and collaboratively to support a fair, orderly, and well-planned transition, ensuring continuity in core services including policing, fire response, housing, transportation, and environmental stewardship.
5. Upholding Public Trust Through Change
I will communicate honestly with residents about the implications of governance changes and ensure that opportunities, challenges, and uncertainties are acknowledged rather than exploited.
6. Personal Accountability and Integrity
By taking this oath, I affirm my readiness to put community interest first, to lead with integrity regardless of outcome, and to support constructive regional decision-making—whether or not it benefits me personally.
I take this oath freely, in service to the residents of my community and the Capital Region, and in recognition of the responsibilities entrusted to those who seek public office.
